About me
My name is Karlena and I am a university qualified nutritionist and an industry recognised personal trainer and group exercise intructor.
Since I can remember, I have been curious about the attainment of health & well-being.
After journeying through my own health barriers with IBS, endometriosis, anxiety and body image, I now consider the terms ‘health’ & ‘well-being’ in their deepest, interconnected & multidimensional form.
‘Health’ and ‘Well-Being’ are not just about what you eat and how you move your body. Although these components can be very helpful! Health does extends far past this. And its attainment is your birth right.
When you connect with this philosophy, I believe the way you nourish yourself and move your body through life - changes - in the most profound way.
I would be honoured to guide you closer to this path.

The Approach & Philosophy
-
Mainstream approaches to nutrition and movement promote unrealistic beauty & fitness standards and create dependency around the use of plans, products and programs to obtain ‘health’. Rather, this approach emphasises body autonomy and brings you back to a place where you can trust your own body wisdom. As we move our body, we reconnect to strength, power, flexibility and joy, rather than striving for ‘thinness’. You get to define health and well-being on your own terms. And curiosity and education are prioritised as you learn to become your own nutritionist and personal trainer.
-
Unlike conventional methods, we don’t focus on ‘weight-loss’ or body changes in the pursuit of ‘health’ and ‘well-being’. Rather, we choose movements and nourishment for how they make you feel. We don’t focus on enhancing or reducing certain parts of our body. Instead, we celebrate the body as it is right now and all the incredible things it can do. When we discuss improvements, we reflect on how you are feeling in your body and the changes you’ve noticed in your health and well-being from a holistic perspective. Weight-loss or enhanced aesthetics are not a measure of ‘health’. Instead, we celebrate all the many other aspects you gain through supportive movement and nourishment.

All sessions are designed for woman at the centre. Your commitments are witnessed and factored. Your lived experience, culture, wisdom and knowledge guide our work. You are seen and recognised as the expert of your own body; you chose, you decide. No two sessions are ever the same. We are all unique human beings with unique needs, desires and dreams so a ‘template’ approach is never applied. Your menstrual cycle is highlighted as a key component of health; we track it, we acknowledge it, we use it as a guide to rest, to move, to nourish and to flourish. If you are experiencing any menopause phase; we thoughtfully integrate this transition into our intentions and plan. Your pelvic floor is not ignored; this important muscle that supports us through so many aspects of life is prioritised, so you feel supported - physically and mentally. And most importantly, the pressures that society places on us as woman and our bodies is observed and discussed; we explore its hold and how we can let go, so we can live out the life we have always imagined.
-
The approaches we use in session are guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā; the māori health model, which recognises ‘health & well-being’ as holistic, interconnected & multidimensional. The attainment of ‘Health’ & ‘Well-Being’ are complex and layered in social, racial, & equity justice matters and trauma. When we can approach nourishment/nutrition and movement with the awareness that they components in a much larger picture, there can be more ease, curiosity and confidence.

The approaches I refer to within session are based on evidence-informed practice. This means that I not only consider the best available research and evidence but also methods that have been successful for other practitioners and people with lived-experience. Before we try or apply any approach - you will be given the final decision; to feel for whether it will work for you and fit within your life. This ensures the work we do together is in collaboration. I believe you hold the expertise to what is right for you and your body, however I can help guide you gently back to this inner wisdom

I am committed to my own personal on-going growth, development and healing as a human being. I actively partake in therapeutic practises, supervision and education/training. This is important for me as it allows me to be the best version of myself and to hold space for my clients in a safe and considered way. Therefore, I have the ability to recognise when something is out of my scope or when you would benefit from another health modality; my promise to you is that I will always refer you to keep you safe and your needs prioritised. I know many brilliant health care professionals, also in this space of client/woman centred care.
